UK Domestic Worker Visa Requirements

UK domestic worker visa allows migrant workers to work in private households in the UK. If you have worked as a domestic worker in a private household outside the UK and your employer wants you to visit the UK and continue working as their domestic worker for a period of up to 6 months when they come to the UK, you can apply for UK domestic worker visa with your employer.

You can apply for a visa to visit the UK with your employer if you live outside the UK, working as a domestic worker in a private household for your employer for 12 months or more.

You can only settle as a domestic worker in a private household if you entered the UK on or before 5 April 2012.

What counts as domestic work?

You will be able to apply as a domestic worker if you are working in one of the following:
 Chauffeurs
 Cleaners
 Cooks
 Nannies
 Proving personal care for the employer and their family

Eligibility Requirements

You will be able to apply for as UK domestic worker visa if you meet the following eligibility requirements:

You must prove that:

 Your age is 19 or above
 You have worked for your employer for at least 12 months in domestic capacity before you apply
 You reside and work in the same household as your employer or in a household they don’t live in but use regularly
 You will travel to the UK with your employer, their partner or children
 You will work as a full-time domestic worker in the same UK household your employer will live in
 You will leave the UK at the end of 6 months
 You can support yourself financially in the UK without relying on any public funds

Your employer also must meet the following:

 He/she must be a British citizen who usually lives outside the UK and who does not intend to remain in the UK for more than 6 months or he/she is a foreign citizen who is coming to the UK on a visit for not more than 6 months
 He/she must pay you at least the national minimum wage

National Minimum Wage

National Minimum wages change on 1 April every year. The current rate of the National Minimum wage from 1 April 2024 is:
£11.44 for those aged 21 and over
£8.60 for those aged 18 to 20

Documents Required

You must submit the documents that include but are not limited to the following:

 Your current passport or other valid travel identification
 Financial proof of self-sufficiency such as a bank statement for at least 6 months
 A letter from the employer confirming your employment with job title, duration for which you have worked for them, and that you are a permanent employee
 An agreement signed by you and your employer where the terms and conditions of employment have been clearly outlined

You must also provide one of the following documents covering the same period of employment:

 Pay slips or bank statements showing payment of salary
 A document that proves the tax has been paid
 A document that proves health insurance has been paid
 Contract of employment
 Work visa, residence permit, or equivalent passport endorsement for the country where you’re currently employed by your employer
 Visas or equivalent passport endorsement if you traveled with your employer before

Additional documents may be necessary depending on individual circumstances, requiring certified translations if not in English or Welsh.

Fees

It costs £637 for an Overseas Domestic Worker visa.

How long you can stay

You can only stay in the UK with your employer for up to 6 months on a UK domestic worker visa. You must leave the UK at the end of the 6 months. You cannot extend an Overseas Domestic Worker visa.
