2025 14 FEB
On 10 February 2025 the UK Home Office significantly tightened its “good character” policy, which is a crucial requirement for obtaining British citizenship through naturalization. From February 10, 2025, onwards, anyone applying for British citizenship through naturalization will face stricter scrutiny. If an individual has made an illegal entry into the UK in the past without a required valid entry clearance or electronic travel authorization, and they apply for British Citizenship on or after 10 February 2025, their citizenship application will normally be refused.
The latest changes to the UK citizenship rules will create major difficulties for refugees who entered the country illegally due to unavoidable reasons but later lived lawfully. They might lose the chance to become UK citizens and could face living in the UK as residents without full citizenship rights.
Those illegal immigrants who applied for British citizenship before 10 February 2025 will be subject to the old definition of "good character". This means that if they applied for naturalization within 10 years of illegal entry, their application will most likely be refused.
This decision of the Home Office confirms that the government is serious about stopping illegal entry. Their efforts are along the same lines of stopping illegal entry into the UK by hiding in small boats or some vehicle or by some other mode of transport. However, this new rule does not apply to people who enter the UK as regular passengers on commercial flights.
You must understand that if you too have taken illegal entry into the UK, then whether you have applied for British citizenship before 10 February 2025 or after that, you must take the advice of a good British citizenship lawyer.
